Cinque Terre Hiking Experience: Monterosso to Vernazza & Corniglia

Discover the Cinque Terre from a completely different perspective on this full-day hiking experience, leaving the crowds behind to explore ancient trails, spectacular coastal scenery, and charming villages surrounded by nature.

Your adventure begins at La Spezia Central Station, where you’ll meet your expert hiking guide before taking a short train ride (included) to Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five villages.

From Monterosso, you’ll set off on the first section of the hike, covering approximately 3.7 km (2.3 miles) with an elevation gain of 217 metres (712 ft). The trail winds through centuries-old stone terraces, olive groves, Mediterranean vegetation, and breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the Ligurian coastline.

After around two and a half hours, you’ll reach the picturesque village of Vernazza, often considered the jewel of the Cinque Terre and one of Italy’s most beautiful fishing villages. Here you’ll have time to relax and enjoy a tasting of local focaccia. If you wish, you can also treat yourself to one of Liguria’s specialties, the famous cheese focaccia or a slice topped with fresh pesto.

After a well-earned break, continue on the second leg of the hike from Vernazza to Corniglia, a scenic 4 km (2.5 miles) trail with an elevation gain of 270 metres (886 ft). This spectacular section offers panoramic views over dramatic cliffs, vineyards, and the crystal-clear waters of the Ligurian Sea.

Perched high above the sea, Corniglia is the quietest and least crowded of the Cinque Terre villages, as it has no direct access to the coastline. Here you’ll enjoy a refreshing artisan basil gelato from a local producer, whose creations have received several awards.

At the end of the experience, you’ll return by train to La Spezia, arriving at approximately 6:00 pm, leaving you free to continue your journey or enjoy the evening in the city.

Physical Requirements

This experience requires a good level of physical fitness and is suitable for participants accustomed to walking on uneven terrain.

Wearing closed hiking or trekking shoes with good grip is mandatory. Participants arriving without suitable footwear or equipment may not be allowed to join the tour for safety reasons.

We also recommend bringing:

• A reusable water bottle
• Sunscreen
• A hat
• Comfortable hiking clothing
• A lightweight waterproof jacket in case of changing weather

For safety reasons, if during the hike the guide determines that a participant is unable to continue or that continuing could present a risk, the participant may be asked to leave the hike. In this case, assistance will be provided to reach the nearest train station, and a train ticket back to La Spezia will be arranged
